Roy is the founding member of The Cobb Law Firm. He began his law practice in South Africa in 1964, after graduating from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg with a B. Com. degree, an Ll.B. degree, and a H.Dip. Tax Law. In South Africa, he practiced in the areas of corporate law, taxation, commercial law, real estate and business representation of publicly-traded companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. He also represented South Africa at the founding conference of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists in 1969 and served as its World Vice President from 1973 to 1984.

Roy and his family emigrated to the United States in 1977. In 1984, Roy founded Emory University Law School’s Jewish Law program and was appointed an Adjunct Professor of Jewish Law. Roy has been licensed to practice law in Georgia since 1979 and was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of South Africa (1964), the High Court of Swaziland (1967), all state and federal courts in Georgia (1979), and the United States Supreme Court (1984).
